Austrian Open G1 2024
2nd place for Anna Schneeberger in an exciting top-class G1 tournament!
In the women's U30 category, 52 participants from 19 nations competed at the Austrian Open 2024 in Südstadt near Vienna. Almost tropical conditions in the hall demanded everything from the athletes. Accordingly, Anna's impressive performance on the day was highly commendable.
While the first round against Holland was more or less a warm-up, the second round against Spain was straight down to business - practically a first key match. An unpleasantly strong athlete who was drawn by lot. However, Anna was able to win this match excellently.
Things got a little easier again in the third round. A home match against our long-term rival Nina Reinsperger from Stockerau was a clear-cut affair in the end and so we faced Croatia in the semi-finals.
Lucija Jazic also had a top day. The number 3 seed in the tournament literally outdid herself and pulled out all the stops to reach the final. Anna had other plans for the day, and so she beat Lucija impressively in a thrilling match.
A side note is allowed here. Lucija and Anna have been good friends for a long time and the day before, the two of them and their parents had a cosy meal together at the Kopp, a well-known traditional Viennese restaurant, for a final refreshment, so to speak.
Then to the final. A hard-fought and well-deserved entry. None other than the world champion and number one in the world rankings, Eva Sandersen from Denmark, was waiting there with "polished shins". And it turned out to be a thrilling, top-level duel at the end of the competition day. Anna had to admit defeat to the champion by a relatively narrow margin. Silver and 2nd place was a more than worthy conclusion to this G1 tournament - congratulations on this achievement!
Now it's time to go home and pack our bags. The next G1 world tournament awaits next weekend in Daegu, Korea.
